I think I'm going to make the switch. Ever since I got my Nex-5, I've been a bit irked by what happens to my photos when I upload to Picasa.

The color and contrast is so much finer. You can see the veins in the leaves and the grain in the rocks with Flickr! I can't believe it's taken me so long to try Flickr! (How many times can I type Flicker!?) This really does make me so happy. Am so excited to explore what Flickr(!) has to offer.
Ok, so maybe I'm being a little neurotic and it's crazy to be so pleased about such a seemingly tiny difference. But it's HUGE to me!

Plant gets standed
Bedroom plant is now living room plant. We spotted the wooden stand at our fave vintage store and liked instantly. The second we nestled the plant inside, we fell in love. It was like reuniting two long lost halves of a whole.
Totally made for each other, don't you think?

Plant stand: bonjour mon cherie...
Plant: Ooo...what strong arms you have!
Plant stand: The better to hold you with darling.
Plant: giggle

Happy Earth Day 2011!
Remember those packets I ordered from Seeds of Change? Well, my little vegebabies have sprouted!
Looks like the cukes are most eager.
The eggplant in the middle rows are a little shy.
I'm such a proud vegigarden mama! (I've borrowed a phase from terri planty)
Happy Earth Day everyone. If you know me well, you know I love the planet. In the superhero/alt-universe version of myself, I am an eco-tree-huggin' earth goddess hippie mama. I practice zero-waste lifestyle, live off-grid, and diy everything, including deodorant. So I probably smell. But since I live chemical free and only ingest organic non-processed, non-meat foods, my natural scent is like wildflowers and sage. Bees are my friends.
In reality, I'm a lazy environmentalist. I do a bunch of little things, but am committed to them.
Also, I really do smell like wildflowers and sage. Kinda. If you squint your nose.

Living Room, nearly twilight
I discovered the film speed option on my digital camera. This isn't a particularly good example, but it was the first I took after I made a new selection. Hopefully this means I'll take better photos, especially in low light - in which I seem to be always shooting.
It's Friday again! yeees. Go have a raucous or relaxing weekend - whichever fits your style best.
CORRECTION: So I posted this Saturday instead of Friday. I cannot keep my posts and my days straight. I so need this weekend! :)

Seeds for the summer
The latest issue of Sunset magazine highlighted a couple of really cool veggies. So I ordered some!
Cannot wait to get that veggie box going. The patio hasn't evolved too much since last summer. But our plants have grown up a little.

A City Afternoon, thanks to Richard Mora
This day promised to be a great from the very start. The sky was blue, air breezy crisp, and we had tickets to God of Carnage, currently being performed at the Ahmanson by the original Broadway cast.
Of course, a pre-show meal was in order and we decided on Bottega Louie, a downtown restaurant/bar/deli/patisserie with a Galeries Lafayette (Paris) feel - an instant favorite! We swung the glass doors open into an airy, light filled space, humming with conviviality. Customers were seated and munched away happily, waited eagerly in line, or browsed the long case of gorgeous edible wares. Employees bustled and swirled around the ebbing and flowing crowd with friendly efficiency. We shared a ready-made sandwich from the deli that they unexpectedly halved and plated for us with a side of Dijon potato salad. Upon snagging a seat in the tightly packed bar dining area, we were offered complimentary flat or sparking water.
The stroll to the theater amongst the tall architecture of downtown was pleasant and, thanks to the sidewalk slant of Bunker Hill, quite warm. The outdoor plaza at the Music Center was alive with a festive dance celebration, I think having to do with the Alvin Ailey show that just opened at the Dorothy Chandler. We entered the Ahmanson and settled into our seats for a story we knew nothing about.

Wow! No wonder they extended the run and of course it has won awards. What a fun and unexpected production. Marcia Gay Harden is brilliant in this (and surprisingly athletic). It is one-act but never tedious. The entire show is basically a single conversation between two, really messed up couples and slyly, with humor and charm, presents a host of social -isims: racism, classism, sexism, alcoholism, homophobism, rude cell phone yakking-ism, etc. for consideration.
If you can, go see it! Here's a link to a LAT cast interview.
We couldn't resist swinging back into Bottega Louie for treats to take home! Look how lovely...
macaroons in their pretty pink box
macroons on our newly thrifted pyrex plate
raspberry beignet, so not a jelly doughnut people
THANK YOU Richard! Sergio and I had a wonderful day. We owe you a macaroon or two. How about another lunch? Louie's maybe?

Dinner 4.8.2011
Recognize those meatballs? From a certain swedish based retailer of seemingly pervasive home furnishings. I forgot to defrost the chicken breast so picked up a bag when I stopped in to check on the Summer inventory. Accompanying on the dish are farmer's market gai lan and last night's dinner leftovers. Brown rice pasta with roasted farmer's market fennel, leek, and beets with dill and parsley.
Also picked up a sparkling chardonnay at Colorado Wine Co. While there, I put my name down for their next shipment of a very delicious Sancerre. It's a new favorite. Apparently the dock workers have been on strike, causing a bit of vino-shipping havoc.
It's the weekend! Go out and have some fun! So much to do, so little time. sigh.

Swapping gray for yellow
Took the day off work to get a face tune-up and then to enjoy lunch down by the sea. Raindrops threaten to dampen the day, but you know what? It doesn't matter. I'll be celebrating the birthday of a good friend and honestly, this is how it feels to take a random day off work:
grin.
These were taken on a spring like day in the dead of winter this past January. The skies are all mixed up!

A Productive Sunday
Today was a good day. We stopped in at Cafe de Leche for a spot o'caffeine + pastry, where we ran into Andrew+Phil (formerly Yermo). Then onwards to Atwater Farmer's Market where we picked up amazing organic veggie goodness and a gaggle of plants for the yard. We started right in on the yard work, er, landscaping when we got home. Security light was replaced, front and back lawn+parkway+ribbon driveway was mowed, and armfuls of weeds pulled. Plants were potted+planted+re-potted. Most importantly, we swept up heaps and heaps of leaves and old lawn cuttings laying in browning mounds around the property. We filled up that green bin to the very tippy top!
Our arms+back+legs ache. ouch. But, we're satisfied with the hard work we managed to squeeze into the final moments of the weekend. Our front yard is finally getting some love and countless yard project debates nearing (semi)conclusions. The key is to pick a single project and focus. We have a tendency towards the shotgun effect when it comes to targeting a project. This year, we're gonna switch on our sniper skillz and finish projects, one at a time.
Here's Sergio, laser scope on.
It was a nice weekend on Almaden Drive overall. The atmosphere was especially convivial with everyone out in their yards, readying for warm weather living. That's Andrew's mower Sergio is running around with and Andrew and Jen gifted us three iris plants we put right into the ground out front. Sergio helped Scott move a BBQ grill and Craig helped mow Saul's parkway. It's downright suburbia in Highland Park.
P.S. I just realized that my knuckles ache. While weeding, I twisted the especially stubborn clumps around my fingers for more leverage. Boy. My knuckles are such babies. Shush! There's no crying in landscaping.

breakfast with billie
We were supposed attend a rain barrel setup class in Silver Lake this morning. Instead, I let Sergio sleep in and I enjoyed some me time.
Green Jeans Range Eggs purchased from the Egg Man himself.
Chrysanthemum/Green tea.
Apple pie made impromptu at 10PM two nights ago.
Billie Holiday on the radio.
What I wore.
The apron was Mom's present from her previous trip to China. Gorgeous right?
